This post is less about something I have made, and more about a setup I have found out about and decided seems right for me.

The topic is reading ebooks, and my motivation for finding a new solution is triggered by amazon cutting supports and compatibility for my 7.th gen Kindle paperwhite.

My current goal:

convenient reading on the go as well as in bed (in the dark). Making it easier to read rather than doomscroll.

My phone chargers in another room so that is disqualified for night time reading, and I already have a fully functional Kindle. So cross device sync and another source of books than amazon is needed.

My current solution:

I will first of all jailbreak my kindle and install KOReader on it, this enables me to keep using the device I already own as my primary reading device. I will introduce Calibre as my library manager, the calibre library will live in Dropbox with the Calibre portable installation managing it. I also intend to try out the Xteink X3, running Crosspoint firmware, for a light weight, small, portable and dedicated reading device, with my iPhone running Readest as the backup solution on the go.

Reading sync progress will be coordinated via a koreader sync server and readest sync, connected to kosync. I plan to set up my own dedicated kosync server.

Wish me luck!

As additional background and history, I have been more or less exclusively been reading on kindle. Shopping books from Amazon since 2011 when I got my first kindle, the 3rd gen version kindle keyboard. I got the paperwhite a few years later because I wanted the backlight for reading in bed without disturbing my partner. Even though whispersync was always an option, I have not been reading a lot from my phone before. Let's see if reading on the go is something I will actually get done!

My ebook and ereader setup - a plan!
